A Chinese Ghost Story Movie Review

This is one of the more famous and certainly among the best of the many fantasy films to come out of Hong Kong in the ‘80s. A handsome scholar enters a haunted temple in old China and falls in love with a beautiful ghost-lady who's kept imprisoned by an incredible tree-monster. The lovers are aided by a Taoist monk as they battle the gruesome guardian and visit the gates of Hell. Unlike many “fantasy” movies, this is a genuinely magical film with great special effects. It was followed by two equally enchanting sequels. In Cantonese with English subtitles.
