Scenes from a Marriage Movie Review

The runaway hit of 1974's San Francisco International Film Festival was this searing entry by Ingmar Bergman, originally made for Swedish television. In spite of its length (168 minutes, cut down from 360 minutes), Bergman uses every second, exploring the hardest of truths about the relationship between two people. Sven Nykvist's flawless camera work doesn't let us leave Liv Ullman and Erland Josephson for very long, and everything else blends beautifully in this masterful film. Ullman's gem of a performance will haunt you for years.
