Rouge Movie Review

Stanley Kwan's Rouge is an extremely interesting ghost story about a lovely wraith who returns to Hong Kong in the 1980s searching for her lover, with whom she had made a suicide pact over half a century before. The fine acting by Anita Mui as the ghost and by Alex Man and Emily Chu as the young couple who try to help her, plus Bill Wong's excellent camera work, helped to make Rouge an award winner in Taiwan. Anita Mui was Kwan's first choice to play the late legendary actress Ruan Ling-Yu in 1992's Centre Stage/The Actress (she was replaced by Maggie Cheung). AKA: Yanzhi Kou.
