Roads to the South Movie Review

Yves Montand, Laurent Malet, and Miou-Miou dignify a watery script about a political father and son who clash in the aftermath of Franco's death. As with 1968's Secret Ceremony, the director (1909–84) seems awfully detached from both the story and the characters. When Montand came to the San Francisco International Film Festival to “plug” the film, he kvetched about Joseph Losey's direction, Jorge Semprun's screenplay, and Michel Legrand's blasting score. Montand said that Bobby Roth's The Boss’ Son was a far superior movie, then returned home to immerse himself in French politics until his death in 1991 at age 70. AKA: Les Routes du Sud.
